I've always been proud of family name. When my Lolo Cesar was still alive, he would tell us how we were related to Marcella Agoncillo, a Filipina who made the first Philippine flag. I also remember the times during my elementary years when we had quizzes on history and the teacher would ask who made the first Philippine flag. My classmates would tell me that they never fail to answer the question because one of their classmates is an Agoncillo. During the late 80's and early 90's, I would normally be asked if I was related to Marcella Agoncillo. During the late '90s, the question often asked of me is if I'm related to Ryan Agoncillo. Not that I'm complaining. He's most probably a close relative, too, since the Agoncillos are from Batangas (Ala eh, oo. Batanguena ako.). Besides, there's a running joke in the family that if the person is singkitin, maputi and medyo malapad ang noo and matangos ang ilong, he/she is most probably related to us. lol. Anyway, I visited a friend's blog (www.greggalang.multiply.com) and saw that he went to Taal, Batangas last weekend. I saw Lola Marcella's statue and I couldn't help but smile. Out of curiosity, I surveyed three people in the office this morning if they know/remember Marcella Agoncillo. Read on and find out what I discovered. Survey Number 1
Shaws: Do you still remember Marcella Agoncillo? JC: (gives me the look for 2 seconds). Uhm, no. Who is she? Shaws: Siya 'yung tumahi ng unang bandera ng Pilipinas... JC: Ah, siya ba? Survey Number 2Shaws: Do you still remember Marcella Agoncillo? HM: No, not really. Who is she again? Shaws: Naku, nasaan kayo ng history lessons n'yo? :) Survey Number 3 (this one's my favorite)
Shaws: Do you still remember Marcella Agoncillo? DJ: (smiles at me) Ay oo, 'yung bading? Shaws: I hate you! Bagsak ka sa history! ROFL. I now have a new mission --- to make sure that Filipinos, especially my friends, know who Marcella Agoncillo is. For more information about Marcella Agoncillo, please visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcela_Agoncillo.

 | Hi there. Came across your blog while surfing about Marcella Agoncillo. You see my maternal family is also an offshoot of the Agoncillos from Taal, Batangas. My maternal great grandma, Lola Maura, is an Agoncillo, from Taal, Batangas. She was a niece of Marcella's husband, and Marcella gave her one of her thimbles as a gift. Lola Maura was married off to my Great Grandpa, from far away Capiz and was based there ever since. I was able to connect to some of my Lola Maura's sibling's families, but since our branch of Agoncillo's is based in Capiz, we've hardly had frequent contact. Yes you are right, many in my maternal family are singkitin, maputi and medyo malapad ang noo and matangos ang ilong. May I know the name of your Lolo and that of his dad? maybe she's a brother or nephew of my Great Grams'. We're trying to piece together a family tree and somehow connect. I have one that was made by the Orosa branch of the Agoncillos. It's great that you still keep the Agoncillo surname. Ours has been many times removed since it runs in my maternal family. best regards
Great to connect with you here. |

 | patzmellizo wrote on Oct 23, '08, edited on Oct 23, '08 Hi, I am Wayne Patrick Mariño Mellizo... I'm from Negros Occidental.. I'm just curious if you're familiar with your great grandmother's middle name, Mariño right?.. Hmmm, my grandfather's name is Reuben Mariño Sr., originally from Batangas.. But unfortunately, he passed away since i was a child so I never got a chance to ask and satisfy my curiosity about my family history.. As far as I know, he met my grandmother at manila during the world war II and went here at the hometown of my lola in Negros.. I'm also looking forward to see a family tree just to check if I'm really related to her.. |
 | Hi there again... Hmmm, that's the problem, I don't have any older relatives left in the Mariño side... My mom said that I can gather more information when I'll visit Batangas... Anyway, thanks for the advice... |
 | hello, do you have a family of agoncillo? coz my grandfather is from batangas his name is roman agoncillo, my mom told me that my great grandmother is marcela agoncillo.something like that. we went there before pasyal lang. doon sa lumang house ng agoncillo. my lolo's sister na lang kc ang mag kukuwento sa mom ko. kc napunta cla ng quezon province. do u have a friendster account? coz im looking forward to see my family tree.
thanks. |
 | Hi. I tried to search about the Mariño Family Tree just right now & I saw your blog. It caught my attention because I am related to Doña Ma. Marcela Mariño-Agoncillo, too. How? That I forgot. But I will ask my father again regarding this matter then I will send you a message again. My father's name is Atty. Edmond de Jesus Mariño, son of Dr. Eduardo Lim Mariño Sr. My name is Yahmannah Christine L. Mariño-Naldoza. I am maputi, kinda singkit but not matangos ang ilong. Haha. Maybe I got it from my mother. By the way, my sister told me that during an interview with Ryan Agoncillo on TV, when asked if he's related to Marcela Agoncillo, he said yes. So he's our relative too.=) Would you mind if I add you on my friends' list here at Multiply? |

 | Hi sharon... i am also interested on how are you related to our Mother of Philippine flag? we're doin a research about Don felipe and Ginang Marcela... thanks! |
 | hi Sharon! I was just explaining to my kids on how we are related to Marcela Marino Agoncillo til I saw this blog. Marcela Marino Agoncillo is my grandma's aunt. ( her dad and Marcela Agoncilo are siblings). My mom and my grandma lived with them, in fact Lorenza Agoncillo is my mom's ninang. Really nice to know that we still have some relatives from this side of the family. |
 | the lolo of my lolo is from batangas. he probably was a traveller (batangeño style), married a native of hindang, leyte and stayed there 'tll his demise. his name is damaso agoncillo. my agoncillo lineage is this: damaso agoncillo - teofisto - iluminado - severino - and me (atty. gildu agoncillo). it's really a long way down, but everytime locals would see us there, they'll ask if were agoncillo's because of our "eyes"; well you confirmed it. |
 | Hmm I was browsing about agoncillo's when I found your blog. My great-grandfather is an Agoncillo-Cabrera. His name is Emilio Agoncillo Cabrera of Taal, Batangas. My grandfather Cesar Cabrera was born in Taal as well. I just don't know how they migrated here in Davao City. I don't have anyone to ask to because they are all deceased already. My mom used to say Marcella Agoncillo is a relative but I never really asked how :D. I'm afraid I have to agree with the maputi, singkit and malapad ang noo. My grandfather was like that. I only got the maputi and singkit part :D |
